Position Summary
The Emergency Vehicle Technician II performs skilled work on the maintenance, diagnostics, and repair of fire apparatus, emergency vehicles, and related equipment. This position ensures that all fleet assets remain safe, reliable, and fully operational to support emergency response functions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on fire apparatus, emergency vehicles, and support equipment.
• Service and repair diesel engines, pumps, generators, hydraulic systems, and related fire apparatus components.
• Inspect and evaluate vehicles and equipment to identify maintenance needs and ensure compliance with safety standards.
• Diagnose and repair complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues within established guidelines.
• Conduct major and minor repairs to ensure apparatus performs effectively under emergency conditions.
• Replace and repair components including electrical systems, suspension, driveline, hoses, belts, and specialty equipment.
• Perform modifications and upfitting of new and existing fire apparatus based on departmental needs.
• Conduct pump testing and other performance evaluations to ensure operational readiness and compliance.
• Assist in maintaing accurate and complete maintenance records, work orders, and inventory usage.
• Communicate effectively with fire personnel regarding equipment condition, maintenance schedules, and repair needs.
• Respond to emergency call-outs and provide after-hours support as required.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
• High school diploma or GED required.
Experience
• Minimum of three (3) years of experience in maintenance, diagnostics, or repair in one or more of the following:
o Heavy equipment (e.g., Cummins, Caterpillar, Detroit, International diesel engines)
o Medium- to heavy-duty diesel trucks
o Emergency response vehicles (fire apparatus, ambulances)
o Automotive diesel systems
o Automotive air conditioning systems
o Over-the-road trucks
Equivalency
• Associate degree in Automotive Technology plus one (1) year of relevant experience, OR
• EVT or ASE certification plus one (1) year of relevant experience
Licenses and Certifications
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
• Must obtain a Texas Class B CDL with air brakes and endorsement within the probationary period
• EPA Section 609 Certification (automotive refrigerants)
• Air Brakes Certification (Coursework or ASE T-4)
• Steering and Suspension Certification (Coursework or ASE T-5)
Preferred Qualifications
• ASE and/or Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certifications
• Diesel technician experience
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Basic computer proficiency, including MS Office or similar systems
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Knowledge of automotive and heavy equipment repair methods, tools, and standardindustry practices
• Understanding of fire apparatus systems, including pumps, valves, hydraulics and emergency lighting.
• Ability to interpret schematics, diagrams, and technical manuals
• Knowledge of safety regulations, including OSHA standards and hazardous material handling
• Proficiency in diagnostic tools and testing equipment
• Ability to maintain records using computerized maintenance systems
• Ability to prioritize and manage multiple work orders efficiently
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
• Ability to follow detailed instructions and work independently
• Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
• Duties are carried out in both shop and outdoor settings, involving exposure to weather conditions, traffic hazards, hazardous materials, and potential response to active emergency scenes.
• Frequent use of power tools, diagnostic equipment, and heavy machinery
• Physical activities include bending, kneeling, reaching, lifting, standing for long periods of time, and twisting.
• Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds
• Exposure to fumes, chemicals, and other conditions common to vehicle repair environments
Additional Requirements
• Availability to work nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, and 24/7 emergency call-out
• Must obtain basic minimum tool list within 90 days of employment.
